High density polyethylene or HDPE is a material derived from the number 2 type of recycled plastic. The most common container is the gallon milk jug. One form of HDPE that has come onto the market is called Polywood. It essentially is plastic lumber produced from type 2 waste recovered from recycling centers. Polywood is actually heavier and stronger than lumber cut from wood. First, the recycled plastic is crushed into pellets and then melted in a pot. Next, ultra-violet substances and color are added. This gives HDPE a huge advantage over traditional wood lumber. The liquid is then cured in molds shaped to normal sizes of lumber. The final product has a grain finish instead of having a smooth polished feel. I expect this material will soon be sold side by side with wood lumber in the home improvement chain stores.

The advantages of high density polyethylene furniture are numerous. First off, this recycled material is environmental friendly. No new plastic material has been introduced to the environment. The plastic has been saved from dumping into the ground and trees are saved from being cut down to make this furniture. Green alternative technologies are becoming a staple in many industries.

HDPE can handle the outdoor elements over time better than wood furniture. Sun, rain, and snow do not degrade high density polyethylene lumber. Insects and termites cannot eat away Polywood lumber. Finally, a great advantage to HDPE lumber is its high tensile strength. It is heavier and stronger than wood yet because it is plastic, there is a slight flexibility to it that makes it more comfortable than wood. Even though wood is somewhat flexible, it tends to warp permanently in one direction or another. Polywood flexes to the shape of a person’s body but springs back when they rise for sitting on it. Wood will crack, splinter, and shear much easier as well.

Next time you are in the market for outdoor furniture, consider buying high density polyethylene pieces. Do not mistake it for the cheap plastic furniture currently prevalent in the stores. Eggshell or satin finishes reside between gloss and matte finishes. Satin finishes have a bit of shine and don’t show damage since they don’t reflect as much light as gloss finishes. You can also clean any soiled areas since the finish can withstand light scrubbing.

Exterior paint can also have chalking qualities. The surface of the paint will oxidize slowly over time and help keep the surface clean thanks to rainfall. However, this type of paint isn’t a good idea if you live in a dry climate since the rain won’t wash the chalk off on a regular basis.

How to install your own aluminum fence

It’s really not as difficult as some people think to install their own aluminum fence… be it for around their backyard or for around their swimming pool.

The hardest part is the actual digging of the holes. They’re usually 2′ into the ground with a diameter of about 6″. You can use a standard post hole digger or make the process easier by using a hydraulic auger.

Before you start digging all the post holes (usually 72.5″ on center for a residential fence), make sure you mark off where your gates are going to be located. Keep in mind before digging your gate holes, that a 4′ wide gate is usually measured as the opening size from the inside edge of one gate post over to the near side of the other gate post.

All the aluminum fence sections come pre-assembled and are ready to install. Once the post is in the ground, slide the fence rails into the holes in the posts and secure them with a self-tapping screw that goes into the post and through the rail inside of the post. Do this for each rail. Once that’s done, you can pour concrete into the post hole that you previously dug out. Time to move to the next hole and repeat the process.

To make sure that all the posts are in a straight line, tie a string to a stake and hammer it in the ground 1′ past or behind the one end or corner post with the other end connected to a stake in the ground 1′ past the last end or corner post in that line. Make sure that each post is right next to the string, but not touching it. Also make sure that each post is plumb by checking each side with a level… before the concrete has a chance to dry.

Continue this for each straight run of fence before attempting to hang the gate.

Installing Amtico wood flooring can be undertaken by any reasonably competent DIYer with little in the way of equipment. If you are laying onto an existing wood floorboard, chipboard, or MDF sub-floor, it is always good practice to install a new plywood base first. This ensures long term wear, it will also prevent undulations showing through your new flooring.

If your sub-floor is reasonably flat, 6mm exterior grade moisture resistant plywood is adequate. This should be fixed at 15-20cm centers with screw nails. If your sub-floor is old and extremely uneven, a thicker grade plywood 9mm or 12mm should be used. However before fixing this, level off any hollows with a latex screed compound. Otherwise the plywood will never be completely flat.

After installing the plywood, spend as much time as possible filling any gaps in the joints, and knocking down nails flat. Then take down any high spots with a medium grade sand paper. More Time taken on preparing the sub-floor will produce huge dividends when you have installed you new Amtico, so do not be tempted to cut any corners.

Depending on how flat and smooth you have managed to make the prepared sub-floor, it may be necessary to apply a further leveler such as Ardex “Feather Finish” which can be applied thinly without the risk of de-bonding

When you are installing over a solid floor e.g. concrete, asphalt, quarry tiles, stone flags etc. it is important that your do a thorough check of the moisture content of the sub-floor. Even a minute amount of moisture in a sub-floor will cause Amtico flooring to start lifting within a very short period of time. Your investment will then be wasted, as the floor will be beyond repair.

Check in the first instance for the presence of a dpm, which should be visible on your outside, walls maybe the first or second line of brick or stone. If there is none evident, and your house was built before 1960, then it is wise to assume that there is no damp proof membrane in the sub-floor.
